Caring of your Porcelain Veneers

In addition to maintaining good oral hygiene, there are other things you can do to ensure that your porcelain veneers stay beautiful for as long as possible.  Porcelain veneers are very susceptible to damage caused by bending or twisting because porcelain cannot handle these flexing types of movements.  While biting into most food shouldn’t be a problem, you may wish to avoid certain foods that typically require a ripping type motion to eat.  This can include but is not limited to jerky, taffy, caramel and other similar foods.   You will also want to avoid ripping or tearing packages or other non-food items as this can crack or break your porcelain veneers.  While it is never a good idea to use your teeth to open a package or container, this becomes an even bigger problem with veneers as the damage can be much more extensive.

Other activities can also cause your porcelain veneers to crack or break.  Avoid chewing on non-food items such as fingernails, bobby pins, ice and anything else that is extremely hard.  It is best to avoid all non-food items completely as most can cause damage to your porcelain veneers.

You’ll want to protect your porcelain veneers during sports just as you would your regular teeth.  It is important to exercise precaution and wear a mouth guard during any contact sport or any activity which could result in an impact to your mouth.

You may also want to wear a mouth guard if you have tendencies to clench your jaw or grind your teeth during sleep or any other time of extreme stress.  Clenching and grinding can easily break or shift your porcelain veneers out of position.  Often times your dentist may suggest another solution in place of the veneers if they know that you have issues with jaw clenching and teeth grinding.
