Proper Care for Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are very thin sheets of porcelain that are custom made and bonded to the front of your teeth.  These are typically created for people who are trying to hide imperfections such as shape, size and color of their teeth.

Porcelain veneers are about as thick as a credit card and somewhat translucent on their own.  However, once bonded to your teeth they can greatly improve upon the appearance of imperfections.  These porcelain veneers are meant to be permanent due to the fact that some enamel is removed from your tooth to apply the veneers.  Several studies have evaluated that each porcelain veneer can last 10 years or more with the proper care.

Taking Proper Care of your Porcelain Veneers

Having porcelain veneers applied does not mean your teeth require any less care.  It is still extremely important to maintain superior oral hygiene habits.  Brushing and flossing regularly still are the most important part of your oral care routine.

The veneers protect the covered surface of your tooth from decay; however the exposed areas of your teeth and teeth that do not have veneers are still susceptible to decay.  It is very important to continue to brush all sides of your teeth, even the veneer to prevent plaque buildup and gum disease.  Flossing is equally important as the veneer only covers the front part of the tooth.  You will want to continue to floss regularly to remove food debris and plaque buildup from between your teeth.

If plaque is not removed than this can cause your gums to recede, which takes away from the overall appearance of the veneers and increase your risk for gum disease.  This may require replacement porcelain veneers to be placed to cover the greater surface area of your exposed tooth.
