Speaking With Your Doctor About Sleep Apnea

Should your doctor diagnose you with obstructive sleep apnea, it is important to follow the designated treatment plan given by your doctor.  Trying to treat the symptoms yourself or seeking other methods of treating symptoms could cause your condition to worsen which can lead to complications including death.

While there are many over the counter products designed to lessen snoring, it is very important to realize that these devices and medications are not the solution when it comes to treating sleep apnea.  Your doctor will work with you to set up a treatment plan that will work for you.  It is important that you follow your doctor’s suggestions.  If something about the treatment plan is not working for you or your lifestyle, be sure to discuss this with your doctor so an alternative solution can be reached.

Treating snoring does not treat sleep apnea.  You or your loved one will still suffer from the disorder even if they are not snoring or snoring less loudly.  Snore guards can be particularly dangerous to the patient.  Instead of over the counter remedies, your doctor can advise you of what you can do to treat sleep apnea and snoring simultaneously.

Treatment Options for Sleep Apnea

Treatment for obstructive sleep apnea requires more than an over the counter snoring remedy.  Snoring is simply an indicator of the disorder, so by correcting this issue, you are not effectively treating the sleep apnea itself.  Most often, the best treatment option is to use a CPAP machine.  This device has a mask that fits over the mouth or nose and blows air at a continuous pressure to help keep your airway open.  This pressure will allow the patient to breathe normally and is the most effective form of treating sleep apnea.

Your doctor will be able to advise you on other treatment options in the event that the CPAP machine is not a viable option for you or your loved one.  There are other options that have been developed to treat obstructive sleep apnea that may be better suited to your specific case.
